Love Letters

I don't know if I told you, but my new calling at church is Compassionate Service. This basically means that I am in charge of making sure all the girls in the ward are happy/feeling good. I chase away sickness and sadness and support everyone in their endeavors. I remember everyone's birthday and give them a card and cupcakes. I make soup for those with the flu. The best part? I make new friends. Lots of new friends. It is the best. Oh, and I have a committee, lest you think that I am Superman, doing all these things alone.

Anyways, the point is, last night at ward prayer (where we all gather for a thought, song, prayer, and socializing on Sunday nights) I started a little thing in our ward called Love Letters/Nice Notes (thanks for the idea, Kenzie!) Basically, you write a note (or two, or ten! Heather...) to people in the ward. Someone who gave a great talk, someone who smiled at you, your crush, etc. Write them a note!

I am so grateful to the kids who helped me sort and deliver all of them at ten at night. It was so good!

All in all, Valentine's day was a success: Romeo and Juliet, cinnamon rolls, California speed, love letters, heart attacks, and awesome friends. Love love love. We are now reconciled. I don't need a lover to have a great day.

Valentine's Day. Of course.

Fact: I hate Valentine's Day.

I want nothing to do with it.
Unless the man of my dreams shows up on my doorstep with flowers...
And, let's face it, he's really bad at taking hints and/or just doesn't like me.
So I am resorting back to my original plan of hating on this holiday for lovers.

All you lover-less people, let's get ice cream and chick flicks and fantasize about the perfect man who will sweep us off our feet and carry us off into the sunset.

And while talking of love...
Isn't this the best picture?
I don't really want to get old, but I know that I will have to.
So, more than anything, I want a lover who will hold my hand when we're old.
And I will also be rocking a red coat.

Valentine's Day

I have three minutes to celebrate my most hated holiday (details coming tomorrow), and I found the perfect poem to do it with. So different, but beautiful:

Valentine
by Carol Ann Duffy

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.

Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

Valentine's Day

Here is comes! Are you ready? I'm not. I keep thinking about last Valentine's day and how wonderful it was. Can this year really compare? Probably not. I am planning to get a pint of Ben and Jerry's and all the Jane Austen movies I can find so I can wallow in my misery. Doesn't sound so great, but you are welcome to join me. At least the movies will have happy endings. I am currently still searching for mine.
