W: Whale Watching

Whale watching is on my bucket list. Whales are really big and slightly scary, but I am fascinated by them nonetheless. This one thinks he's a ballerina. Which I am totally fine with. Take all the magic of the ocean and mix in a creature that sings (!!) and has mysterious physique. I want one. Do you think they're friendly? Or am I too tiny to pay much attention to? Like a hamster? Hmmmm...

Waves and Weak Stomachs. (and the adventure of a lifetime.)

Ship on ocean by CHGPhoto.

The whole running off to sea thing was inspired by a deep sea fishing trip my family took on Saturday. I have been looking forward to this for a month now. We all know how I love the ocean and dream of being a pirate. Well, I got seasick. WHAT?! Where did that come from? The thought never even crossed my mind that that could be an issue. So the plan is to somehow spend enough time on the water to conquer my weak stomach. And then to eventually run away and be a pirate. Maybe being a mermaid would be better plan...

Anyways, an awesome friend introduced me to this awesome idea. What do you think?

50 days on a cargo ship. $600. No baggage limitations (that's the one that got me!). Wouldn't you like to come? And see the world? I am seriously considering it. Really. I need an adventure.

L: Lighthouses

I want to be a wanderer. I want to live in a gypsy wagon or an Airstream, but part of me loves permanence. And a lighthouse is the best kind of permanence. Strong. Immovable. And the light! My favorite hymn is Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy. I want to buy a lighthouse. I want to be the light that guides in the boats to safety. It conjures up images of Nathaniel Bowditch, pirates, the ocean, beautiful things.

One day. One day I will be a lighthouse owner.

Agreed.
I might add balloons to that.

Dreaming

As the weather warms up and we begin to enjoy floaty dresses and picnics, I find myself dreaming of the ocean and counting down the days until I see it again. This summer, there is nothing stopping me from going each week. No outrageous gas prices, no vindictive schedulers, no angry rain. Just me. And I am going. You are welcome to come along, but only if you understand the enchantment. Only if you find solace in the sunshine, sand, and swirling waters. Only if you value the solitary. Only if you allow me my calm moments before pestering me with the frisbee or the kite, because I simply cannot resist the childlike feeling that those things give me. And if we get a sailboat, well, I just might be in heaven.

Thanks Jo!

Water

I want to BE the Little Mermaid.

Dawna and I got to talking about amazing stories and the Little Mermaid is on the tv and I basically just want to abandon my life for a life at sea. I could be happy as either a mermaid or a pirate. Did you ever read The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle? She technically wasn't a pirate, but living on a ship at sea is the most romantic life I could possibly think of. Living in a Jane Austen novel would be tempting, but I'm afraid that the social confines of that kind of society would bore me after a while, where as a life at sea would have just the right amount of sunshine and adventure for me.

One of my favorite stories if all time is Kraken by Peter Dickinson (you can find it in Water: Tales of Elemental Spirits). I can't give it away, but the story of the princess and her lover being attacked by pirates is more fantastic than I could have ever imagined.
